The Flexible PCB Application Guide
Flexible PCBs have numerous applications in solar cells, cell phones, vehicles, and airplanes. They require thin and durable flexible sheets. We specialize in providing customized solutions for various sectors.
Flexible PCB Applications – An Overview
Flexible PCB Manufacturer has numerous applications in industries such as solar cells, cell phones, vehicles, and airplanes, where thin and durable flexible sheets are required. This FPC Circuit Board Application Guide provides interesting information about the industry.
- An FPC board, also known as a Flexible PCB, is a cylindrical or rectangular-shaped PCB that varies in size according to its application requirements.
- FPC is divided into two categories: rigid and flexible. Rigid FPCs are used for mechanical connections but cannot bend. On the other hand, flexible FPCs are double-sided PCBs that can withstand bending forces.
- FPCs are primarily used for electrical interconnection applications. They do not require solder joints, making them easy to modify and customize. The flexibility of FPCs allows for various retrofit solutions.
- Using FPC significantly reduces the cost of printing new boards for specific applications. FPCs are commonly used in applications that require both flexibility and conductivity.
However, FPCs are not suitable for applications that require mechanical strength. Due to their thin and lightweight nature, they are commonly used in portable devices like cell phones, digital cameras, and walkie-talkies. They can also be used in larger devices such as peripherals and power supplies. Let’s discuss further.
Applications of Flexible Printed Circuit Boards
Flexible PCBs have a wide range of applications in various fields, including solar cells, cell phones, vehicles, and airplanes. These applications require thin and durable flexible sheets that can withstand bending, folding, or rolling.
FPCs find applications in various industries such as audiovisual, PC products, mobile phones, HDDs, cameras, automobiles, and displays.
In the realm of printed circuit boards, FPCs play a crucial role, especially in circuit sheets printed on flexible substrates like PET or laminated silica. They offer excellent flexibility and can withstand high temperatures, making them ideal for integration into PCBs.
Thanks to their versatility, FPCs are suitable for a wide range of applications that require durable and cost-effective embedded components.
FPC circuits are particularly well-suited for projects involving solar cells and cell phones. Mondo is a professional R&D and manufacturer of high-precision Flex PCB circuit boards. The development of folding screens presents technical challenges, with the application of FPC being one of them.
The emergence of folding screen mobile phones has driven the growth of the FPC industry, with size becoming a focal point of research and development.
As smartphone technology continues to evolve, flexible screen mobile phones are emerging as the next design trend after full-screen devices.
Due to their lightweight, thinness, and flexibility, flexible circuit boards have become essential components in consumer electronic products like smartphones. In the development of folding screens, flexible circuit boards are expected to be widely used. However, their application in smartphones still faces technical difficulties that manufacturers are working to overcome.
The homogenization of smartphones has prompted manufacturers to seek innovation, leading to the rise of foldable screen phones.
Manufacturers like Huawei, Samsung, and Royole have already released folding screen mobile phones, while others like Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo have developed prototypes. However, achieving mass production of folding screens still poses many technical challenges, including the application of FPC.
FPC exhibits characteristics such as lightness, thinness, bendability, winding, foldability, and high wiring density.
FPC aligns perfectly with the development themes of lightweight, thinness, and miniaturization.
Application Trend: Leading the Way in PCB Industry
In recent years, FPC has emerged as a leading player in the PCB segment industry, particularly in the production of display screens and PCB hard boards for flexible screens.
Developing a foldable PCB is a complex and time-consuming process, especially when it comes to selecting suitable electronic materials.
FPC finds extensive applications across various sectors, including mobile terminals, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, industrial control, medical devices, screens, printers, aerospace, and military.
Among these sectors, mobile terminals, especially smartphones, represent the largest application field for FPC and drive its future technical advancements.
The trend towards miniaturization and intelligence points to flexible mobile phones as the future direction of the industry.
In a mobile phone with a flexible screen, the flexible circuit board inside the device needs to meet higher requirements due to the need for repeated folding. This expands its area of usage.
However, the manufacturing of FPC is often constrained by the size limitations of production equipment. To address this, techniques such as middle socket extensions and gold finger reinforcements can be employed.
The growing adoption of FPC in mobile phones is an established trend, which contributes to a positive market outlook. Nevertheless, FPC still encounters manufacturing challenges, particularly in large-size applications for folding screen mobile phones.
There are solutions available, such as FPC Circuit Board Applications, to tackle these challenges, but they may increase costs. Achieving better cost control for FPC can be accomplished through strategies like mass production or technological upgrades.

Flexible Circuit Types
Single-Sided Flexible PCB
The most basic PCB board, one side contains electronic components, and the other side contains wires. Since the wires are mainly concentrated on one side, this type of PCB board is called a single-sided board. As it has only one side, there are limitations in designing the circuit’s line routing. Generally, single-sided boards are suitable for simple circuits.
Double-Sided Flexible PCB
As the name suggests, a double-sided board allows routing on both sides. To enable wiring on both sides, there needs to be a circuit connection between the two sides, which is achieved through guide holes (VIA). On a double-sided board, you can see small holes coated with metal, which are the guide holes.
Compared to single-sided boards, double-sided boards can use both sides for wiring, effectively doubling the available area. The use of guide holes allows for connections between the lines on both sides, avoiding the issue of crossover encountered with single-sided boards. Therefore, double-sided boards are suitable for more complex circuit scenarios.
Multi-Layered Flexible PCB
A multi-layered board consists of multiple single-sided or double-sided wiring boards, greatly increasing the wiring area. These boards are also known as multilayer printed wiring boards.
For example, a four-layer printed circuit board uses a double-sided wiring board as the inner layer and two single-sided wiring boards as the outer layers. By following the designed conductive diagram, using a positioning system and insulation bonding material alternately, the four-layer printed circuit board is produced. Similarly, a six-layer printed circuit board consists of two double-sided wiring boards as the inner layer and two single-sided wiring boards as the outer layers.
In general, the number of layers in a multilayer board is an even number, and the count includes the outermost two layers on the inside.
It is important to note that the number of layers does not indicate the number of independent wiring layers present in the multilayer board. In some cases, empty layers are added to achieve a specific thickness. Although it is usually difficult to determine the number of layers based on appearance due to the tight connection between layers in the PCB package, careful examination can still reveal the difference.
With current technology, multilayer boards can have up to nearly one hundred layers. However, ultra-multilayer boards are primarily used in large supercomputers, which are now being replaced by clusters of ordinary computers. As a result, ultra-multilayer boards are rarely used anymore.
